W8GIO

  Paul SK

On May 31st W8GIO, Paul R. Vest, died of congestive heart failure.

He was 80 years old.  Paul was originally from Huntington, WV.  He first

became interested in Amateur Radio in 1939 while in the Boy Scouts.

In fact his son NW5E, Gary, said his dad started out bootlegging

before getting his one and only Amateur Radio call just before World

War II.  Paul served in the United States Marine Corps and was one of

the first occupying troops in mainland Japan in September 1945.  Paul

was a serious DXer and a beacon on 10 meters for many years from his

Bunker Hill, WV location.  He was an A1 OP and had a DXCC total of 342

countries on the ARRL DXCC list.  W8GIO was a net control and trustee

of the W7PHO Family Hour Net.  Paul will be cremated and a small

family service will be held.  Paul is survived by his son NW5E, Gary,

who had been taking care of W8GIO over the last three years.
